WHAT IS SELF-CARE...REALLY?
Many of us grew up believing that the more you sacrifice, the bigger the reward. We think that pushing ourselves to the point of exhaustion has to pay off eventually, right…?
When we’re stressed, self-care is usually the first thing to go…but that only makes things worse. When we avoid things that make us feel physically and mentally well, we deplete our confidence, energy, and self-esteem.
Many people think self-care is just about meditating or working out, getting a mani-pedi, or going to the spa. While those techniques may work for some, self-care is so much more—it’s the practice of taking an active role in protecting, preserving, and improving one’s own health and well-being.
To get started, here are 4 general areas that you should consider when creating a self-care plan that works:
Physical (Body)
This area is about caring for your body and helping it to be the best it can be. Try to think about the things that leave your body feeling great after. Once you find out what that is, just try to do more of it. Taking care of our bodies not only helps to keep us healthy, but it can also help to boost our self-esteem.
Psychological (Mind)
It’s important that we check-in with ourselves and notice things like racing thoughts or feeling anxious. There are tools we can use to help improve our mental health. But if you’re experiencing symptoms that continue to feel overwhelming, find a trusted mental health professional and start the conversation. There’s no shame in rebalancing yourself, Queen—ever.
Emotional
This can be anything that connects you to your feelings and emotions. Take a moment each day to check-in with yourself. Work through difficult feelings in an active way to ensure that you learn from your emotional challenges rather than letting them eat you from the inside. You can do this through journaling, but there are lots of other ways to show yourself real self-compassion.
Spiritual
This space can include religion, but it’s really about knowing your values, morals, and realizing what brings you peace.
Taking time to indulge in your own interests demonstrates your worth, Queen, leading to improved self-esteem and a more positive outlook on the world.
It teaches you a lot about yourself and provides you with insight into what you need to be the best version of yourself.
Self-care helps you better cope with stress and to prioritize what’s important to you. You’ll be better able to take care of others when you also take time to meet your own needs.
